Seventy-eight:

Young Adult (2011)

Summary/Review:

After a failed marriage, Mavis, a young adult fiction writer, goes back to her hometown to try and reconnect with her first boyfriend, who just had his first child.

My opinion:

I highly enjoyed Mavis’s character. I enjoy deeply flawed characters, and she definitely had issues. I was surprised to see Patton Oswalt in this movie; I was not expecting him. I enjoyed his character as well. I really enjoyed the overhead scenes showing Mavis’s hands, and the entire tape player scene. Very interesting camera work.

Seventy-seven:

The Adventures Of Tintin: The Secret Of The Unicorn (2011)

Summary/Review:

A young reporter and his dog go on a voyage to discover the past of an old family secret.

My opinion:

The score was cute and kept up well with the action. The animation was some of the best I’ve seen. The voice acting was appropriate. It was a wonder plot line that kept me guessing. The characters were cute and enjoyable. I loved this film. Worth the wait of me seeing it.

Seventy-six:

Goodfellas (1990)

Summary/Review:

A young boy had always wanted to be a gangster. He got his start at a young age, and the film follows his life story over three decades.

My opinion:

I’m starting to watch more “gangster” genre styled films, and I am highly enjoying them. There was one scene that was particularly interesting to me: The first date that Henry and Karen go on is all done in one take. It’s not the longest take I’ve ever seen, but it was extremely long compared to what I’m used to. It was interesting because of the camera movement — It had to weave in and around the kitchen corners and such. I was interested with the story line; it was well acted and written. I don’t have any complaints or critiques, really. I found it quite humourous at times. Overall, it was a good film.

Seventy-five:

Blade Runner (1982)

Summary/Review:

In the future, there are humanoid robot type things that started a mass slaughter of humans. Blade Runners were hired to destroy any that were still on Earth. A few escaped, and a particularly good Blade Runner was called in for the job.

My opinion:

I thought the ending and the exposition were interesting and entertaining, but the entire middle part was lacking, in my opinion. I thought it was an intriguing plot, but for some reason, it didn’t hold up for me. I don’t know if I’d watch it again in all honesty.

Seventy-four:

Beaches (1988)

Summary/Review:

Two completely different, young girls meet on a beach when they are eleven. They keep in touch as they grow into young women, discussing love, hopes and dreams, thoughts, and life. The film follows their life-long friendship.

My opinion:

I wasn’t really expecting this movie to be as good as it was. I like coming-of-age films and films that are told over a long stretch of time. I was pleased with it. I thought Bette was phenomenal. I’ll be tucking Beaches away for a raining day; I’ll definitely watch it again.

Seventy-three:

Confetti (2006)

Summary/Review:

Three couples enter a magazine’s competition for best original wedding in order to win a house.

My opinion:

I thought this movie was cute. I enjoy the mockumentary style of films. I would probably watch it again because it was pretty funny. It poked fun at how crazy some people can get, competitions, and the wedding industry. It had a cute overall theme, and I was generally pleased with what is was.

Puss In Boots (2011)

Summary/Review:

Puss wants to clear his ill-informed reputation by paying back the bank he is said to have stolen from in his hometown.

My opinion:

I thought it was pretty cute. I enjoyed all the voice actors and thought it was relatively funny. Overall, it held up its end.

Seventy-one:

Punch Drunk Love (2002)

Summary/Review:

A socially inept man starts a journey with a strange woman after she drops off her car in front of his business.

My opinion:

I was very interested in the direction of this film. It had a lot of long takes, and almost seemed like it could have edited out a lot of what was shown. I’m glad it wasn’t, however. I really enjoyed seeing the camera follow the characters and not just cut at ever chance. I was very distracted by the score, though. I was just thrown off by it the entire time. Adam Sandler did a fine job in this role. I like seeing him stray from comedies.

Seventy:

Hugo (2011)

Summary/Review:

A young, orphan boy runs the clocks in a train station during the 1930’s in Paris. He likes to tinker with gears and machines. He soon meets a young girl that likes story book adventures, but has yet to have one of her own. They embark on a journey together to discover Hugo’s late father’s final work.

My opinion:

I LOVED this film. It takes a lot for me to love a film as much as I loved Hugo. I don’t think I have ever loved an opening shot more than Hugo’s. I thought it was a beautifully written, acted, directed, cinematographed? (I know that’s not a word.) Everything about it was fantastic. Beautiful, beautiful film.

Sixty-nine:

Café (2011)

Summary/Review:

A small town coffee shop hosts a few regulars that are all intertwined. Told over the course of a few days, each person’s story unfolds.

My opinion:

I think they point the film was trying to make was tired, and went about it in a dull way. I wasn’t impressed with the script or the acting. Nothing completely stood out at me during this film either. I don’t really have an opinion of it other than it was disappointing and not what I expected.

Starter For 10 (2006)

Summary/Review:

A young man’s quest for knowledge lands him on a quiz challenge team at his university after leaving his mother and friends.

My opinion:

I thought it was a funny, feel good movie. Nothing more nothing less. I’ll probably watch it again when I am bored, but it was highly predictable.

Sixty-seven:

The History Boys (2006)

Summary/Review:

A group of intelligent, university bound boys in the ’80s discover themselves and each other.

My opinion:

I was very pleased with this film. I thought it was brilliantly written and acted. I thought every character was fantastic, which is rare for me to do. I really don’t have anything bad to say. I thought it was a great film.

Sixty-six:

The Godfather (1972)

Summary/Review:

A mafia boss’s daughter gets married and soon the whole family is in town to celebrate. A war breaks out among the five families, and Don Corleone must do his best to keep up his family and business.

My opinion:

I was very pleased with this film. I was a little wary of watching it because a three hour film is new territory to me, but it was very good. I thought it had one of the best opening lines I’ve ever heard. Everything had its purpose, and it never felt like three hours to me.

Sixty-five:

The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy (2005)

Summary/Review:

Arthur Dent is saved by his friend through hitching a ride onto an alien ship after his home planet, Earth, is blown up. They travel the universe trying to save the all ready doomed world.

My opinion:

I was not entirely pleased with this film; however, I’ve not read the books. In that sense, I was quite confused. I think it was a little too much information to be put into a film, but I could be wrong. I liked Sam Rockwell and Martin Freeman in it, but little else.

Sixty-three:

A Clockwork Orange (1971)

Summary/Review:

A young boy obsessed with rape, violence, and milk is put in jail and offered a way of “reprogramming himself” into a model citizen.

My Opinion:

I thought it was a very odd film, good, but very odd. I’m interested in giving the book a try. I thought it was well acted and it kept my attention through the entire film.

Sixty-four:

Notting Hill (1999)

Summary/Review:

A famous actress stumbles into a young, British man’s travel book shop igniting an intriguing relationship.

My Opinion:

I thought it was cute for what it was. Again, I’m not a fan of happy endings, but it’s a romantic comedy. I knew what I was getting into. I think I may watch it again on a dull evening, but other than that, most likely not.
